I like to think of the limiting threshold as a ceiling, and my audio as a blob of plasticine. Very often, the compression above this threshold will be very extreme, hence the term limiter.
Whereas a compressor will have an adjustable threshold, above which the audio will begin to compress at a ratio set by the user, a limiter will have a fixed threshold at the target volume level. Limiters are very similar to compressors but with a few fundamental differences which make them more suited to a specific task. Saturn 2 is available now for $154 and can also be trialed for 30 days, so there’s great reason to check it out.Using a limiter on the master channel is something most aspiring producers will tackle early on, but like compression, it does help to at least have a basic understanding of what is happening.
